When your band is going to bear a name like FORMULA 400, you better deliver some asphalt-eating aural power, and since forming in 2018, that’s exactly what this San Diego County band has been dishing out in spades. Here in 2023, Dan Frick (guitar/vocals), Kip Page (bass), Ian Holloway (guitar/vocals), and the recently acquired Lou Voutiritsas (drums) not only have a fiery 2020 debut, “Heathens,” to look back on, but also plenty of club and festival appearances in 2022 alone. There can be little to no doubt that this is the perfect time to strike with a sophomore release. And with sophomore album, “Divination,” they strike, somehow with even more force and speed than their undeniably powerful first release. Instead of making an ill-advised trip to the store and overhauling everything, the foursome knows they’re onto something damn good, and instead hits the road for round two with a more finely tuned, yet meaner machine with some extra horsepower. Still drawing from modern, groovy stoner metal, late-’60s motor rock, and gritty ’70s hard rock outfits, the intensity/heavy meter reads higher than ever. The result: nine blistering tracks with harder vocals, tighter rhythms, faster tempos, and front-loaded with mighty guitar work. From the ultra-intense opening salvo of “Whiskey Bent” to the slow, massive build of the closer “In Memoriam,” everything is pure killer, no filler.
